Can you tell whether hash is good before you smoke it? It’s an important question; whether you smoke hash regularly or just as a rare occasional treat, you should be able to tell the difference between a premium product and a lower quality one. Luckily, once you know how, it’s not so hard. The smell, colour and texture of exceptional hash is all pretty easy to spot.
This guide explains how to identify high-end hash. We look at the different types of CBD hash available on the market, and list a few of our best-selling options from HempElf’s CBD Hash Collection. Be warned; once you’ve had a taste of the top-shelf, it’s not easy to go back!
What is hash?
A quick reminder before we dive jump straight into the specifics. Hash is short for hashish and is a concentrated form of cannabis resin. Typically hash is made by collecting trichomes (the tiny, crystal-like structures on cannabis flowers and the most potent part of the plant) and compressing them into a dense, malleable substance.
While traditional hash often contains THC (the cannabinoid classically associated with cannabis, that makes you feel “stoned”), CBD hash offers a non-intoxicating, non-psychoactive alternative, providing all the benefits of cannabidiol without the high. The product is dense and resinous, and is made up of a juicy blend of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds.
While not a medicine, CBD hash can support wellness and offer consumers a number of benefits. These may include stress and anxiety relief, improved sleep and relaxation, as well as anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
What does good hash look like?
So, what does hash look like when it’s truly top-shelf? Let’s break it down by the most important characteristics; texture, color, smell, and potency.
Note: While it's hard to assess potency just by looking at a product, we’ve included this element as it’s a key indicator of good quality hash.
1. Texture
One way of telling whether your hash is fresh and of good quality is its texture. High-grade hash will fall into one of two categories: soft and malleable or firm, but pliable.
-
Soft and malleable – This type is easy to crumble or shape with your fingers. A sticky consistency indicates high resin content and freshness.
-
Firm but pliable – Not quite as soft, but still will still bend when you apply pressure. If the hash is firm, but still pliable, this is a solid indication it has been well-cured and preserved.
What textures should you avoid?
Hash that is super hard and brittle is likely to have a low resin content or be over-processed. We recommend you also avoid hash that feels overly dry. This is likely a sign your product has been stored poorly, is old, or has gone stale.
2. Colour
Great hash can be any colour; from pale blonde to dark brown and even deep black. While colour doesn’t define quality when it comes to hash, it can offer insights into the type of product you’re consuming.
-
Light golden or sandy hues often indicate that hash is sifted (often known as dry sift or pollen hash) and produced using high-quality, resin-rich flowers. Dry sift hash is a simple yet very effective way to produce cannabis concentrate. The solventless extract is made with minimal equipment and yet delivers some seriously potent rosin.
-
Darker brown tones are more often spotted in pressed or aged hash. In this case, aged isn’t a dirty word; these varieties may still be of good quality.
-
A deep black exterior with a lighter interior can be a sign of traditional, hand-pressed hash. For example, Afghan and Moroccan hash is made using special kneading techniques which give the hash its black colour and squishy, fudge-like consistency.
3. Aroma
A multi-layered, rich aroma is one of the clearest signs of great hash. Premium CBD hash should have a strong, terpene-rich scent that lingers even when it’s broken apart. Again, it's not one size fits all. Both the strain and the extraction method will have an impact on the smell of any product; good hash might smell earthy, floral, fruity, and even a little spicy.
What to look out for?
It’s a red flag if your hash has a chemical-like odour or smells musty. In these cases, the product is almost certainly low quality, and has likely been made using cheap or ineffective extraction methods. Hash that hasn’t been stored properly is also likely to lose its smell.
4. Potency
While traditional hash is judged in part by its THC content, in this case we’re talking about CBD hash. So, potency should be considered based on a product’s CBD concentration, as well as the presence of other beneficial cannabinoids. High-quality CBD hash should offer noticeable relief without a psychoactive effect.
