What is CBD?
You might be surprised to learn that some researchers believe hemp could have been mankind’s first agricultural crop leading to settlements and establishing the first cities.
We have written records of CBD-rich hemp being used over 4,000 years ago in ancient China by emperors for therapeutic pain relief. CBD is nothing new!
CBD comes from hemp flower extract and may be taken in many different forms including CBD oils or tinctures, CBD capsules, CBD topicals, CBD gummies, and more.
Also known as cannabidiol, CBD is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid compound and the primary component in hemp extract.
It isn’t known to cause any harmful side effects and doesn’t cause any of the unwanted psychoactive effects associated with cannabis and THC. This is because hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, the psychoactive substance found in cannabis.
However, because it does contain trace amounts of THC it could cause you to fail a drug test. But don’t worry, there’s THC-free CBD oil for that!
Is CBD Legal?
CBD and Hemp were removed from the definition of cannabis with the passing of the 2018 Hemp Farming Act. This effectively removed CBD from the DEA’s list of controlled substances and made it 100% legal at the federal level.
However, the FDA still labels CBD as an active pharmaceutical ingredient due to being in its approved seizure medication, “Epidiolex”.
While this regulation disallows CBD from being added into food or drinks, many brands and businesses are producing CBD-infused edibles and drinks.
At state level, the majority of states do not impede the sale and use of CBD products, allowing them to be bought and sold freely without any issues.
CBD from hemp is legal in all 50 states as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC.
Is CBD Safe?
CBD is considered to have a very high safety profile and has been tested in both humans and animals in high dosages for several weeks at a time.
CBD does lower blood pressure, which can be a risk if you already have low blood pressure. CBD also alters the way that the liver processes certain pharmaceuticals. If taking any medications with a grapefruit warning, check with a doctor before taking CBD.
The most common side effect of taking CBD is a strong urge to rest or sleep, depending on the dosage. Each person responds uniquely to CBD according to a variety of factors including:
- Genetics
- Personality
- Environment
- Dosage
- Tolerance
- Potency
- And more
